That on Charlie's Angels, Sabrina was the only Angel who was never seen in a bikini or swimsuit? These are only a few of the more than 9,800 facts readers will find in this work, which presents detailed information on 134 syndicated and cable series broadcast from 1948 to 2003, plus six experimental programs broadcast from 1937 to 1946 and 204 unsold pilots broadcast from 1948 to 1996, that featured the work of television's law enforcers who risk their lives to solve crimes and bring criminals to justice. The entries are arranged alphabetically and provide such details as character names, addresses, names of pets, telephone numbers, and license plate numbers--in short, anything and everything that adds interest to a program and its characters. Many of the entries contain information about related projects, including TV movies and pilots that were broadcast as part of a series (for example, Sharon Stone's appearance as detective Dani Starr on the "Hollywood Starr" episode of T.J. Hooker).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radio and Television personality, Joe Martelle, Author of Radio Pro, the definitive book on personality radio presents a comprehensive overdue portrait of one of Hollywood's all-time popular actors, Robert Urich. In this first and only authorized biography, Martelle paints a personal portrait of his late friend's life and career. With riveting story-telling thanks to unprecedented access to Urich's personal journal, the author masterfully weaves the actor's own words with his narrative, obtained from countless interviews with Bob's late wife, Heather Menzies Urich, family members, friends, classmates and co-workers to reveal a compelling insight into a complex man who for three decades was the one of Hollywood and television's most popular stars. Urich starred in a record 16 television series, including Vega$, Spenser: For Hire and the popular CBS mini-series Lonesome Dove. However, Bob's greatest role as the author describes was spokesperson for the American Cancer Society and his six-year battle with cancer. Traveling across America, preaching the gospel of survival, Robert Urich served as an inspiration to thousands dealing with their own disease and urging them never to quit or give up hope for a cure. Previously, unreleased family photo's capture touching moments of the actor's life, including those taken during his final years. Robert Urich's handsome face, complete with his boyish grin was familiar to television viewers for well over 30 years, but until now, little was known about his off-screen life, because of his intense privacy. His personal life remained in the shadows. This in-depth biography reveals everything you ever wanted to know about the actor's life and career. A consummate professional, Urich shunned the Hollywood spotlight, but was tenacious in his attempt to be the very best in everything he undertook. As Martelle points out, "Bob was a really good guy, who loved acting, but loved his family more." As you will read, Robert Urich did lead an extraordinary life and his story told here will remain the definitive biography. Joe Martelle was a popular radio and television air personality for over 40 years. His on-air career began in his home state of Maine, where he was inducted in the Maine Radio & TV Hall of Fame in 2013. Joe was one of Boston's most beloved radio performers for 20 years. In addition to his morning- drive show on 98.5-WROR, he also hosted the most popular all-request oldie show in the history of Boston radio. Saturday Nite 'Live' at the Oldies was #1 for 12 consecutive years. While on radio in Boston, he pulled double-duty as host of several television programs, including an afternoon movie on Ch.-68 and a kids show TV-POW on the local Fox TV affiliate. Joe's radio career also includes on-air stints in Cincinnati at WLW, KLDE Houston and Sunny 104.5 in West Palm Beach. Joe and his wife Kimmie live in the tranquil mountains of Western Colorado, where they share the land with their numerous four-legged friends.

This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos is a perennial source of fear and fascination. The original "formless void" (tohu-wa-bohu) mentioned in the book of Genesis, chaos precedes the created world: a state of anarchy before the establishment of cosmic order. But chaos has frequently also been conceived of as a force that persists in the cosmos and in society and threatens to undo them both. From the cultures of the ancient Near East and the Old Testament to early modernity, notions of the divine have included the power to check and contain as well as to unleash chaos as a sanction for the violation of social and ethical norms. Yet chaos has also been construed as a necessary supplement to order, a region of pure potentiality at the base of reality that provides the raw material of creation or even constitutes a kind of alternative order itself. As such, it generates its own peculiar 'formations of the formless'. Focusing on the connection between the cosmic and the political, this volume traces the continuities and re-conceptualizations of chaos from the ancient Near East to early modern Europe across a variety of cultures, discourses and texts. One of the questions it poses is how these pre-modern 'chaos theories' have survived into and reverberate in our own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lying in Early Modern English Culture is a major study of ideas of truth and falsehood in early modern England from the advent of the Reformation to the aftermath of the failed Gunpowder Plot. The period is characterised by panic and chaos when few had any idea how religious, cultural, and social life would develop after the traumatic division of Christendom. While many saw the need for a secular power to define the truth others declared that their allegiances belonged elsewhere. Accordingly there was a constant battle between competing authorities for the right to declare what was the truth and so label opponents as liars. Issues of truth and lying were, therefore, a constant feature of everyday life and determined ideas of individual identity, politics, speech, sex, marriage, and social behaviour, as well as philosophy and religion. This book is a cultural history of truth and lying from the 1530s to the 1610s, showing how lying needs to be understood in action as well as in theory. Unlike most histories of lying, it concentrates on a series of particular events reading them in terms of academic theories and more popular notions of lying. The book covers a wide range of material such as the trials of Ann Boleyn and Thomas More, the divorce of Frances Howard, and the murder of Anthony James by Annis and George Dell; works of literature such as Othello, The Faerie Queene, A Mirror for Magistrates, and The Unfortunate Traveller; works of popular culture such as the herring pamphlet of 1597; and major writings by Castiglione, Montaigne, Erasmus, Luther, and Tyndale.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Spenser write his epic, The Faerie Queene, in stanzas instead of a classical meter or blank verse? Why did he affect the vocabulary of medieval poets such as Chaucer? Is there, as centuries of readers have noticed, something lyrical about Spenser's epic style, and if so, why? In this accessible and wide-ranging study, David Scott Wilson-Okamura reframes these questions in a larger, European context. The first full-length treatment of Spenser's poetic style in more than four decades, it shows that Spenser was English without being insular. In his experiments with style, Spenser faced many of the same problems, and found some of the same solutions, as poets writing in other languages. Drawing on classical rhetoric and using concepts that were developed by literary critics during the Renaissance, this is an account of long-term, international trends in style, illustrated with examples from Petrarch, Du Bellay, Ariosto and Tasso.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hard-bitten PI with a bottle of bourbon in his desk drawer--it's an image as old as the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction itself. Alcohol has long been an important element of detective fiction, but it is no mere prop. Rather, the treatment of alcohol within the works informs and illustrates the detective's moral code, and casts light upon the society's attitudes towards drink. This examination of the role of alcohol in hard-boiled detective fiction begins with the genre's birth, in an era strongly influenced and affected by prohibition, and follows both the genre's development and its relation to our changing understanding of and attitudes towards alcohol and alcoholism. It discusses the works of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Mickey Spillane, Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Block, Marcia Muller, Karen Kijewski and Sue Grafton. There are bibliographies of both the primary and critical texts, and an index of authors and works.
