Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wittgenstein’s Whewell’s Court Lectures contains previously unpublished notes from lectures given by Ludwig Wittgenstein between 1938 and 1941. The volume offers new insight into the development of Wittgenstein’s thought and includes some of the finest examples of Wittgenstein’s lectures in regard to both content and reliability. Many notes in this text refer to lectures from which no other detailed notes survive, offering new contexts to Wittgenstein’s examples and metaphors, and providing a more thorough and systematic treatment of many topics Each set of notes is accompanied by an editorial introduction, a physical description and dating of the notes, and a summary of their relation to Wittgenstein’s Nachlass Offers new insight into the development of Wittgenstein’s ideas, in particular his ideas about certainty and concept-formation The lectures include more than 70 illustrations of blackboard drawings, which underline the importance of visual thought in Wittgenstein’s approach to philosophy Challenges the dating of some already published lecture notes, including the Lectures on Freedom of the Will and the Lectures on Religious Belief

Book excerpt: Dark Tourism, as well as other terms such as Thanatourism and Grief Tourism, has been much discussed in the past two decades. This volume provides a comprehensive exploration of the subject from the point of view of both practice - how Dark Tourism is performed, what practical and physical considerations exist on site - and interpretation - how Dark Tourism is understood, including issues pertaining to ethics, community involvement and motivation. It showcases a wide range of examples, drawing on the expertise of academics with management and consultancy experience, as well as those from within the social sciences and humanities. Contributors discuss the historical development of Dark Tourism, including its earlier incarnations across Europe, but they also consider its future as a strand within academic discourse, as well as its role within tourism development. Case studies include holocaust sites in Germany, as well as analysis of the legacy of war in places such as the Channel Islands and Malta. Ethical and myriad marketing considerations are also discussed in relation to Ireland, Brazil, Rwanda, Romania, U.K., Nepal and Bosnia-Herzegovina. This book covers issues that are of interest to students and staff across a spectrum of disciplines, from management to the arts and humanities, including conservation and heritage, site management, marketing and community participation.

Book excerpt: Throughout history, Fable Kings and Queens have been a myth to most. Who would believe that there are boys and girls who can communicate with all life? But they are real--and so is Memoril, the mythical island that contains every kind of life, even dragons, and dinosaurs, phoenixes, krakens, and so many more magnificent things. Fable Kings and Queens have always been drawn to the island of all; some have even been born there. Right now, on Memoril, there are no Fable Kings--but there is a young Fable Queen. Her name is Miral: she is quite different, and she holds close to her heart...something very special indeed. Meanwhile, in the Ponds of Peace, the Elder Frog, Papa Ernes, sends Cupid the courageous frog out into the jungle for the first time to deliver something very important; but on the way, Cupid loses the package, and then he meets Miral, the Fable Queen. Miral and Cupid soon become friends and decide to go on an adventure around the island. Now things are about to happen: good things and bad things. Wonderful things. Terrible things. Things that have never happened before. Everything is about to change, forever. There is no going back. The colours are home.

This book was released on 2015-05-14 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For several terms at Cambridge in 1939, Ludwig Wittgenstein lectured on the philosophical foundations of mathematics. A lecture class taught by Wittgenstein, however, hardly resembled a lecture. He sat on a chair in the middle of the room, with some of the class sitting in chairs, some on the floor. He never used notes. He paused frequently, sometimes for several minutes, while he puzzled out a problem. He often asked his listeners questions and reacted to their replies. Many meetings were largely conversation. These lectures were attended by, among others, D. A. T. Gasking, J. N. Findlay, Stephen Toulmin, Alan Turing, G. H. von Wright, R. G. Bosanquet, Norman Malcolm, Rush Rhees, and Yorick Smythies. Notes taken by these last four are the basis for the thirty-one lectures in this book. The lectures covered such topics as the nature of mathematics, the distinctions between mathematical and everyday languages, the truth of mathematical propositions, consistency and contradiction in formal systems, the logicism of Frege and Russell, Platonism, identity, negation, and necessary truth. The mathematical examples used are nearly always elementary.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities grow and change. New urban space emerges and existing urban spaces are being changed. We expect from these spaces not only to fulfil important functions, but also to possess particular spatial qualities. How can such qualities be defined and evaluated? Jürgen Weidinger, professor for landscape architecture at the Technische Universität Berlin answers to these questions by engagement with the phenomenon of atmosphere. This way, the spatial quality of urban places, such as parks, promenades and squares, can be augmented. Weidinger offers a method for the designing of atmospheric places. This approach can also serve to evaluate design concepts and realised projects. The reader presents comments by internationally active landscape architects as well as writers from different fields such as environmental psychology, theatre studies, the arts and literature studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After his intellectual biography, Saint Augustine of Hippo, Miles Hollingworth now turns his attention to one of Augustine's greatest modern admirers: The Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein. Wittgenstein's influence on post-war philosophical investigation has been pervasive, while his eccentric life has entered folklore. Yet his religious mysticism has remained elusive and undisturbed. In Ludwig Wittgenstein, Hollingworth continues to pioneer a new kind of biographical writing. It stands at the intersection of philosophy, theology and literary criticism, and is as much concerned with the secret agendas of life writing as it is with its Subjects. Here, Wittgenstein is allowed to become the ultimate test case. From first to last, his philosophy sought to demonstrate that intellectual certainty is a function of the method it employs, rather than a knowledge of the existence or non-existence of its objects--a devastating insight that appears to make the natural and the supernatural into equally useless examples of each other. This biography proceeds in the same way. Scattered in every direction by this challenge to meaning, it attempts to retrieve itself around the spirit of the man who could say such things. This act of recovery thus performs what could not otherwise be explained, which is something like Wittgenstein's private conversation with God.
