Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symbols and strange images that we find in our cemeteries, religious structures, banks and in our parks are the same symbols that have been part of the framework of the human psyche for thousands of years. While contemporary man may think that they are simply decorative manifestations of a by-gone era, they represent the fears, dreams, ideas, beliefs and struggles that humankind has endured since we began to walk upright. This book surveys many of these icons and will give a meaning for them both in the context of ancient history and folklore as well as a meaning that is suitable for our contemporary times. Illustrated with dozens of photographs, this book will be of interest to anyone interested in historic preservation, ancient symbolism, the Green Man and the universal application of imagery. Gary R. Varner has written numerous books on ancient traditions, folklore, the environment and contemporary issues. He is a member of the American Folklore Society and the Foundation for Mythological Studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the seven million people who visit the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris each year probably do not realize that the legendary gargoyles adorning this medieval masterpiece were not constructed until the nineteenth century. The first comprehensive history of these world-famous monsters, The Gargoyles of Notre-Dame argues that they transformed the iconic thirteenth-century cathedral into a modern monument. Michael Camille begins his long-awaited study by recounting architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc’s ambitious restoration of the structure from 1843 to 1864, when the gargoyles were designed, sculpted by the little-known Victor Pyanet, and installed. These gargoyles, Camille contends, were not mere avatars of the Middle Ages, but rather fresh creations—symbolizing an imagined past—whose modernity lay precisely in their nostalgia. He goes on to map the critical reception and many-layered afterlives of these chimeras, notably in the works of such artists and writers as Charles Méryon, Victor Hugo, and photographer Henri Le Secq. Tracing their eventual evolution into icons of high kitsch, Camille ultimately locates the gargoyles’ place in the twentieth-century imagination, exploring interpretations by everyone from Winslow Homer to the Walt Disney Company. Lavishly illustrated with more than three hundred images of its monumental yet whimsical subjects, The Gargoyles of Notre-Dame is a must-read for historians of art and architecture and anyone whose imagination has been sparked by the lovable monsters gazing out over Paris from one of the world’s most renowned vantage points.

Book excerpt: Clark Ashton Smith was a prodigy, who wrote Arabian Nights novels in his mid-teens and was heralded as a major voice in American poetry by the time he was nineteen. In one frantic burst in the middle 1930s, he wrote nearly a hundred strange, wondrous, and grotesque stories, most of which were published in Weird Tales, Strange Tales, Wonder Stories, and other pulps, but he was by no means a conventional pulp writer. Think of the visions his stories conjure up as sendings, written in strange runes, transported from the sorcerer's lair by indescribable genii or winged spirits.

Book excerpt: Gargoyles takes you on a journey into a mysterious world, through bestiaries and traveling menageries, past grotesques and chimeras, through medieval cities and guilds and into huge stone buildings. Gargoyles are an embodiment of form and function—serving a clear architectural purpose but, also, symbolically important. Whether warding off evil, frightening away fear or showcasing human foibles, when a gargoyle was placed on a building, people noticed. The book delves into historic models of arcane craftsmanship and architecture, considering the reasons for gargoyles coming into being and hearing the legends of the gargoyle, both mythic and modern. It, also, covers the emergence of stone creatures into popular culture. For modern magick users, Gargoyles explores the role of the gargoyle in magickal practice, including gargoyle use in elemental correspondences, stone magick, protection, warding, egregores, talismans, animal associations, ritual and spell work.

Book excerpt: Paris, 1887 Fifty-five years after the Second Republic arose from rebellion, France is a technological juggernaut and envy of the civilized world. Airships ply the skies, steam wagons crowd the streets, and automaton soldiers guard palaces and factories. Darkness and soot choke a city where innocent blood flows freer than wine at stately banquets. Nanette Lamaine lives underground in Paris’s catacombs with her overprotective but brilliant magician father Hercule and their pet gargoyle Gaston. By day she tinkers on inventions in her laboratory while nights are spent keeping Gaston out of trouble. When magic is outlawed and government agents murder her father, Nanette seeks out Paris’s greatest sorceress–the mysterious Madame Astrid–who schools her in the thaumaturgical fighting arts, an elegant combination of physical agility and elemental magic. Nanette and Gaston reluctantly join the Flywheel Fellowship, a ragtag band of misfits determined to topple the sadistic Admiral Aguillon. But revolutions don’t always run smoothly, and Nanette finds herself with France’s most incompetent rebels; an idealistic but cowardly poet, a sarcastic clockwork thief, and an anarchist who’d rather bake soufflés than fight. As Nanette comes to grips with her role as a leader, she realizes the past affects her actions and that she must fight for respect. In a city where magicians are scared and gargoyles sentient, Nanette risks everything to unravel a conspiracy that could shake the Second Republic to its core, or destroy what remaining family she has left.

Her independent news business has taken off, giving her the freedom to report on Moon Grove’s most overlooked stories — at the cost of quality time with her magically maturing young twins. But when a paranormal travel blogger disappears while chronicling Moon Grove’s notoriously secretive gargoyle community, leaving nothing but a chilling selfie behind, Zoe’s tempted yet again to stick her wand where it doesn’t belong. Between the blogger’s final perplexing picture and an increasingly cold-blooded response from the gargoyles, Zoe realizes cameras don’t lie, but someone is — especially when she recognizes someone lurking in the background. Can Zoe track down the missing writer? Or will she be the next to vanish in a flash? Gargoyles and Graves is the twelfth book in the Magic and Mystery series of witch cozy mysteries. Book excerpt: Focusing here on the comic genius of Flannery O’Connor’s fiction, Anthony Di Renzo reveals a dimension of the author’s work that has been overlooked by both her supporters and her detractors, most of whom have heretofore concentrated exclusively on her use of theology and parable. Noting an especial kinship between her characters and the grotesqueries that adorn the margins of illuminated manuscripts and the facades of European cathedrals, he argues that O’Connor’s Gothicism brings her tales closer in spirit to the English mystery cycles and the leering gargoyles of medieval architecture than to the Gothic fiction of Poe and Hawthorne to which critics have so often linked her work. Relying partly on Mikhail Bakhtin’s analysis of Rabelais, Di Renzo examines the different forms of the grotesque in O’Connor’s fiction and the parallels in medieval art, literature, and folklore. He begins by demonstrating that the figure of Christ is the ideal behind her satire—an ideal, however, that must be degraded as well as exalted if it is ever to be a living presence in the physical world. Di Renzo goes on to discuss O’Connor’s unusual treatment of the human body and its relationship to medieval fabliaux. He depicts the interplay between the saintly and the demonic in her work, illustrating how for her good is just as grotesque as evil because it is still "something under construction."
