This question has long compelled the attention of storytellers and students of literature alike, and over the past several decades it has opened up broader dialogues about the nature of culture and interpretation. This third edition of the bestselling Essentials of the Theory of Fiction provides a comprehensive view of the theory of fiction from the nineteenth century through modernism and postmodernism to the present. Book excerpt: 'Mr. Bennett and Mrs. Brown' is an essay by Virginia Woolf published in 1924 which explores modernity. Woolf addresses what she sees as the arrival of modernism, with the much-cited phrase "that in or about December, 1910, human character changed", referring to Roger Fry's exhibition Manet and the Post-Impressionists. She argued that this in turn led to a change in human relations, and thence to change in "religion, conduct, politics, and literature". She envisaged modernism as inherently unstable, with society and culture in flux. She develops her argument through the examination of two generations of writers. Her argument is that as times change, writers and the tools that they use must evolve, "the tools of one generation are useless to the next". She places Bennett in the Edwardians, and the subjects of his attacks as "Georgians" to reflect the change of monarch in 1910 that coincided with Fry's exhibition. She characterizes Georgian writers in modernist terms as impressionistic, and those that are "telling the truth."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A good essay must draw its curtain round us, but it must be a curtain that shuts us in, not out.' According to Virginia Woolf, the goal of the essay 'is simply that it should give pleasure...It should lay us under a spell with its first word, and we should only wake, refreshed, with its last.' One of the best practitioners of the art she analysed so rewardingly, Woolf displayed her essay-writing skills across a wide range of subjects, with all the craftsmanship, substance, and rich allure of her novels. This selection brings together thirty of her best essays, including the famous 'Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown', a clarion call for modern fiction. She discusses the arts of writing and of reading, and the particular role and reputation of women writers. She writes movingly about her father and the art of biography, and of the London scene in the early decades of the twentieth century. Overall, these pieces are as indispensable to an understanding of this great writer as they are enchanting in their own right. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

In her novels, short stories, essays, polemical pamphlets and in her private letters she explored, questioned and refashioned everything about modern life: cinema, sexuality, shopping, education, feminism, politics and war. Her elegant and startlingly original sentences became a model of modernist prose. This is a clear and informative introduction to Woolf's life, works, and cultural and critical contexts, explaining the importance of the Bloomsbury group in the development of her work. It covers the major works in detail, including To the Lighthouse, Mrs Dalloway, The Waves and the key short stories. As well as providing students with the essential information needed to study Woolf, Jane Goldman suggests further reading to allow students to find their way through the most important critical works. All students of Woolf will find this a useful and illuminating overview of the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writing from positions of cultural exclusion, women have faced constraints not only upon the "content" of fiction but upon the act of narration itself. Narrative voice thus becomes a matter not simply of technique but of social authority: how to speak publicly, to whom, and in whose name. Susan Sniader Lanser here explores patterns of narration in a wide range of novels by women of England, France, and the United States from the 1740s to the present. Drawing upon narratological and feminist theory, Lanser sheds new light on the history of "voice" as a narrative strategy and as a means of attaining social power.

Book excerpt: Virginia Woolf (1882-941) is one of the most interesting writers of our century. In this introductory book, John Batchelor tells the story of her life and writing career, highlighting the important aspects of Woolf's temperament: her passion, her learning, her acute intelligence, her lesbianism, her self-absorption. He discusses the works, devoting separate chapters to the five major novels: Jacob's Room, with its highly ironic celebration of masculinity; Mrs Dalloway, with its odd time structures and pointed observation of 1920s London society; To the Lighthouse, which can be read as an elegy for Woolf's own family as well as a great work of modernism; The Waves, extending the narrative methods of its predecessors; and Between the Acts, Woolf's complex satire of the Condition-of-England novel. In addition, Professor Batchelor looks at Woolf's uneasy relation to modernism and the question of her feminism. This book, equipped with a chronology and guide to recommended further reading, is an ideal companion for students and new readers of Woolf.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading critics from Britain, Canada, and the US examine modernism's imaginative rethinkings of sex, gender, and sexuality. Original essays show how modernism intersects with the suffragette movement, technological change and its effects on women and labor, the growth of pseudo-scientific writings, and the burgeoning lesbian and gay movement. They show how modernism upsets the fixities of gender and sexuality through its fascination with ambiguities, marginality, and the crossing of borders. Sex reformers and sex changers, unsexed storytellers, typewriters, femme and butch experimenters, suffragettes in wide-brimmed hats, musical and dramatic pageants, adolescent delinquents, sunbathers, and dancing indigenes all play a role in the heterodox and varied modernism revealed in these essays.
