Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Which dessert is named after the heroic third-century Queen Zenobia of Palmyra? Which luscious rice pudding shares its name with the eighth-century Abbasid Caliph al-Ma'mun? How does one make the perfect Baqlawah? Blending cookery with culture and recipes with history, this is the fascinating and delectable story of traditional Arab sweets. The authors here take us on a culinary journey across Iraq, Syria, Egypt and al-Andalus, presenting readers with clear and easy-to-recreate recipes from across the medieval Arab world. Filling the tables of caliphs and noblemen, these sumptuous desserts of saffron and rose water conjure the opulence and grandeur of the medieval Islamic world. Bringing together tenth- to fourteenth-century Arabic texts, the authors retrace the history of these sweet dishes, reviving the original recipes and following their development and influence over the centuries into non-Arabic speaking lands. Honey, dates, figs and pomegranates are just a few ingredients featured in this exquisite selection of mouth-watering desserts which have been modernised for cooks to try at home, all woven together with medieval poems and stories. From delicious pastries, filled with pistachios and fragrant syrups, to luscious puddings, biscuits, and pies, it is the ideal addition to any kitchen. A unique insight into Middle Eastern culinary history, this book is a must-have for anyone with a sweet tooth.

Book excerpt: From award-winning author Tera Lynn Childs comes a fun, flirty story about friendship, fashion, and how far one girl will go to avoid another conversation about her ex. “Eye Candy is a romance that's just as sweet and addicting as candy, without the high sugar content” — The YA Lit Chick Every girl deserves something sweet... Lydia Vanderwalk has worked hard to have the perfect job, the perfect wardrobe, and the perfect everything else. She only needs two things to make her life completely perfect: 1) a promotion at work and 2) for everyone to stop talking about the supposedly-perfect fiance she left at the altar. She tries to check number two off the list by inventing a fictitious boyfriend, but the plan backfires when she actually needs to produce him in order to go after number one. Phelps was supposed to be pure eye candy, a male model hired to play the part of picture-perfect boyfriend. But there’s more going on beneath his pretty face than charm and spontaneity. Throw in a banking wunderkind ex-fiancé, a trio of cutthroat couture-climbers, and an adventure that leads from New York to Milan and back again, and Lydia soon learns that what you see is often much less than what you get when it comes to people and not everything in life can be solved by a Jolly Rancher and a shopping spree. Eye Candy is a standalone book in the City Chicks series, a romantic chick lit romp perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Carrie Bradshaw, and Project Runway. Praise for Eye Candy “This is a candy cotton good book, sweet, light and funny.” — julie on Amazon “Loved every page!!!!” — Cally on Goodreads “It’s a perfect summer read!!!!” — moviebunny on Goodreads “I love, love, LOVE this book! Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A sweet tooth is a powerful thing. Babies everywhere seem to smile when tasting sweetness for the first time, a trait inherited, perhaps, from our ancestors who foraged for sweet foods that were generally safer to eat than their bitter counterparts. But the "science of sweet" is only the beginning of a fascinating story, because it is not basic human need or simple biological impulse that prompts us to decorate elaborate wedding cakes, scoop ice cream into a cone, or drop sugar cubes into coffee. These are matters of culture and aesthetics, of history and society, and we might ask many other questions. Why do sweets feature so prominently in children's literature? When was sugar called a spice? And how did chocolate evolve from an ancient drink to a modern candy bar? The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets explores these questions and more through the collective knowledge of 265 expert contributors, from food historians to chemists, restaurateurs to cookbook writers, neuroscientists to pastry chefs. The Companion takes readers around the globe and throughout time, affording glimpses deep into the brain as well as stratospheric flights into the world of sugar-crafted fantasies. More than just a compendium of pastries, candies, ices, preserves, and confections, this reference work reveals how the human proclivity for sweet has brought richness to our language, our art, and, of course, our gastronomy. In nearly 600 entries, beginning with "à la mode" and ending with the Italian trifle known as "zuppa inglese," the Companion traces sugar's journey from a rare luxury to a ubiquitous commodity. In between, readers will learn about numerous sweeteners (as well-known as agave nectar and as obscure as castoreum, or beaver extract), the evolution of the dessert course, the production of chocolate, and the neurological, psychological, and cultural responses to sweetness. The Companion also delves into the darker side of sugar, from its ties to colonialism and slavery to its addictive qualities. Celebrating sugar while acknowledging its complex history, The Oxford Companion to Sugar and Sweets is the definitive guide to one of humankind's greatest sources of pleasure. Like kids in a candy shop, fans of sugar (and aren't we all?) will enjoy perusing the wondrous variety to be found in this volume.

It consists of ninety-four poems and was the first book to be published by Montgomery's new (Canadian) company, McClelland, Goodchild, and Stewart, afterwards McClelland and Stewart. The volume is dedicated to the soldiers of the First World War who had given their lives for their country. Its title poem is about a Roman soldier who had guarded Christ's tomb and is struggling with what he fears is a conversion to belief in the Nazarene. Montgomery hoped that poem would speak to others about mysterious future good to come from the current dark days of the war. Book excerpt: This meticulously edited collection includes the complete poetical works by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the publications "The Watchman and Other Poems" and "Uncollected Poems". The Watchman and Other Poems is a collection of poems by Lucy Maud Montgomery, originally published in 1916. Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874 – 1942), was a Canadian author best known for a series of novels beginning with Anne of Green Gables. Montgomery went on to publish 20 novels as well as 530 short stories, 500 poems, and 30 essays.
