Since that time the SPR series has altered according to the fluctuating degree of activity in various fields of chemistry. Some titles have remained unchanged, while others have altered their emphasis along with their titles; some have been combined under a new name whereas others have had to be discontinued. Book excerpt: Since its introduction into the armoury of the analytical chemist approximately two decades ago the technique of gas chroma tography has found very extensive applications in the analysis of most types of organic compounds. One of the few remaining limitations of the technique when applied to such compounds, namely the analysis of very highly boiling and or thermally unstable substances, has been overcome in many instances by the introduction of techniques such as silation for the conversion of sample components to lower boiling or more stable substances which can be gas chromatographed at reasonably low temperatures. All of this has been extensively dealt with in many books published during recent years dealing with the theory and practice of applying gas chromatography to the analysis and preparative separation of organic compounds. In parallel with these developments there has occurred, particu larly over the past decade, a growing interest in the application of gas chromatography to the analysis of organometallic compounds. Indeed, for many types of organometallic compounds, gas chromatography is the analytical method of choice particularly, as so often happens, when the sample is a mixture. To the author's knowledge no complete review exists of the published work in this very interesting new field; a situation it is hoped the present volume will rectify.

It shows the insights this work offers on natural language processing and the relation between language, mind, and memory. Compounding is an easy and effective way to create and transfer meanings. By building new lexical items based on the meanings of existing items, compounds can usually be understood on first presentation, though - as, say, breadboard, cardboard, cupboard, and sandwich-board show - the rules governing the relations between the components' meanings are not always straightforward. Compound words are segmentable into their constituent morphemes in much the same way as sentences can be divided into their constituent words: children and adults would not otherwise find them interpretable. But compound sequences may also be independent lexical items that can be retrieved for production as single entities and whose idiosyncratic meanings are stored in the mind. Compound words reflect the properties both of linguistic representation in the mind and of grammatical processing. They thus offer opportunities for investigating key aspects of the mental operations involved in language: for example, the interplay between storage and computation; the manner in which morphological and semantic factors impact on the nature of storage; and the way the mind's computational processes serve on-line language comprehension and production. This book explores the nature of these opportunities, assesses what is known, and considers what may yet be discovered and how.

This book provides a description and analysis of its tone system, progressing from lexical tones towards morphotonology. Tonal changes permeate numerous aspects of the morphosyntax of Yongning Na; they are not the product of a small set of phonological rules, but of a host of rules that are restricted to specific morphosyntactic contexts. Rich morphotonological systems have been reported in this area of Sino-Tibetan, but book-length descriptions remain few. This study of an endangered language contributes to a better understanding of the diversity of prosodic systems in East Asia. The analysis is based on original fieldwork data (made available online), collected over the course of ten years, commencing in 2006.
